Las Vegas casino reopens after fire

Houston Chronicle, Friday, February 15, 2008 at 7:50:21 PM

The Monte Carlo resort has reopened three weeks after a rooftop fire.

Casino spokeswoman Yvette Monet says the Las Vegas Strip resort opened its casino floor and hotel at about 10:30 a.m. Friday following a pep rally for employees.

Resort-owner MGM Mirage Inc. estimates the Jan. 26 blaze cost about $100 million in repairs and lost business. County investigators believe the fire was caused by welders working on the roof. the rest

Monte Carlo fire loss estimated near $100 million

Insurance Journal, Friday, February 15, 2008 at 2:10:28 PM

A fire that sent gamblers fleeing from the Monte Carlo hotel-casino on the Las Vegas Strip in January will cost close to $100 million in repairs and lost business, casino operator MGM Mirage Inc. said. The company has insurance, but it's not clear how much of the claim will be paid, MGM Mirage spokesman Alan Feldman said as the hotel-casino moved closer to reopening. "While we do have insurance and we are confident we will not lose all of that $100 million, how much we get back remains to be seen,'' he said. the rest

Monte Carlo casino in Vegas to reopen Feb 15

Reuters, Saturday, February 09, 2008 at 9:47:20 AM

MGM Mirage said on Friday its Monte Carlo Hotel on the Las Vegas Strip will reopen its doors for customers on Feb. 15 after being closed two weeks ago after a fire. The company said Monte Carlo plans to open with no fewer than 1,200 guest rooms available and management anticipates an additional 1,300 rooms will become available a week later. The remaining 500 rooms in Monte Carlo's 3,000-room inventory are located on the upper floors and will remain out of service while undergoing more extensive redesign, MGM said. the rest

Officials: Casino fire accidental

CNN, Thursday, January 31, 2008 at 10:56:56 PM

A fire at the Monte Carlo Resort and Casino in Las Vegas last week was likely caused by flying molten metal from a cutting torch being used by construction crews, the Clark County Fire Department said Thursday.

Fire strikes Las Vegas hotel-casino

Reuters, Friday, January 25, 2008 at 10:18:18 PM

Fire forced guests and staff to evacuate the 3,000-room Monte Carlo Resort & Casino in Las Vegas on Friday, quickly engulfing parts of the upper floors, facade and roof before being brought under control.

There were no serious injuries in the blaze, first reported at about 11 a.m. (2 p.m. EST) in the south tower of the huge hotel complex on the Vegas strip, but a dozen people were treated for smoke inhalation, authorities said.

The Monte Carlo -- owned by MGM Mirage, the world's second-largest casino operator -- was quickly evacuated and the strip was shut down in both directions, jamming traffic back onto Interstate-15 as embers and debris fell into the street. the rest

“Card room is very small, and the 11pm tourney ($60 buy-in) was very poorly attended (8 players total). A real disappointment, because the stakes were right, the staff courteous and professional, and the players convivial (and somewhat tighter than the stakes would indicate).”

About: Cafe
“For lunch Mom and I tried the café at Monte Carlo and I was pleasantly surprised to find that they had a great menu, great service and fabulous fare. I am not normally a café or coffee shop person, but this ended up being our most popular place for meals and it was cheap. Mom and I shared a berry salad with feta cheese and spinach leaves, a Rueben with fries and iced tea. Service was exceptional and we knew we would be back.

Next day, breakfast: this was the best breakfast we had the whole trip. Fluffy pancakes, chunky sausages perfectly cooked, a mushroom and cheese omelet, orange juice and coffee. Best mushroom omelet I have ever had and the great service. We tipped well and the staff appreciated it.”

About: Buffet
“We decided to try the buffet at Monte Carlo and I must say it was not dinner, but a journey through iccccccccckkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkk! No other way to say it. The only carved meats they had were prime rib, when turkey or ham would have been nice. No fresh seafood at all, very limited salads and when I went to the pasta station to have some fettuccini, I took 1 look at the water being used to heat up the noodles and decided against it. The dessert area was marginal at best and for $19 a head, I am glad I didn’t pay for it. Service was also poor and we stiffed the wait staff as they let the plates pile up and offered no service at all until the end.”

“Was coded to VIP check in and I have to say they could not do enough for me. I was assigned a room on the 31st floor, offered to have my boarding passes printed anytime, given a late check out at check-in, charged $50 a night vs. the standard $100 for incidentals and invited back for wine, coffee in the morning, drinks, etc. The attitude was “glad you’re here” and for a first timer at Monte, I have to say I was very pleased with their service and attitude. I went up to see the room, no flat screen tv, bathroom was good sized with a shower/tub enclosure. Plenty of towels, nice smelling bath amenities and very quiet from what I could tell.”
